You’re no doubt familiar with all the shampoos and conditioners on the market, but what is a hair mask and do they work? This haircare essential is not something that should be overlooked. From pampering to nourishing from root to tip, there are a number of organic hair masks ready to transform your locks.
What does a hair mask do?
Between shampooing, drying and styling, your hair goes through a lot day-to-day. Prolonged heat can cause hair to appear dry and brittle, exaggerating the appearance of split ends. A hair mask takes the healing properties of conditioner and applies them more intensively. It has a heavier concentration of the nourishing, natural ingredients that repair our hair, so a weekly application can work wonders.
What do hair masks contain?
Hair masks are rich in fruit extracts and essential oils, known for their natural abilities to heal the hair. Oils help our hair to maintain moisture and suppleness, while fruit extracts can help to prevent breakage, reduce thinning and give the hair extra volume.
In henna hair masks, there are the additional antiseptic properties of the henna plant, helping to calm the scalp and wash away dandruff. Our henna hair masks contain mango butter which offers fatty acids to smooth the hair. Likewise, you’ll also find pH-balancing green tea and fig vinegar to help your hair withstand the elements.
Do hair masks work for those with sensitive skin?
If you have a sensitive scalp, you may be worried about the products you apply to your hair. The benefit of henna hair masks is that they are hypoallergenic, which means they do not include ingredients likely to provoke allergic reactions.
Many high street hair products contain common irritants such as fragrances, preservatives and ammonia. With a henna hair mask, you’ll benefit from all the nourishment of natural ingredients, without nasty chemicals.
How to use a hair mask
You don’t need to use a hair mask every day, so you can make it last as part of a long-term hair care routine. For best results, apply your mask once a week. Before you start your regular shampoo and conditioning, take the following steps:
- Wet the hair with warm, not hot, water.
- Squeeze out excess moisture.
- Apply the mask using your fingers throughout sections of the hair. Cover the bottom two thirds, avoiding the roots.
- Leave for a minimum of three minutes, up to 10. Rinse, then wash and condition as usual.
Guilt-free nourishment
You’ll start to see the difference from the first treatment, but after a couple of weeks you should feel stronger, shinier hair. You can choose a mask for normal hair or benefit from an extra colour boost with our Colour Fixation hair mask.
Whichever one you choose, you’ll be treating your hair and your skin whilst looking after the environment. Whether you’re a styling addict, a swimming pool fanatic or just somebody seeking luscious locks, you can get it all from just one weekly application. Treat yourself!
